A learning specialist shows you how to raise a successful reader and writer.

Take this opportunity to find out how children really learn to read and write. Explore current research that cuts through the media messages about reading wars and the right way to teach children. Learn by reading stories about children, doing interactive assignments, and exploring the latest in parent and childcare information. You will see everyday children's play with a new eye as you understand how play can connect to literacy.

You'll learn how a child becomes literate from the moment of birth. First, you'll investigate the many things a child's growing mind must do to make sense of the written word and create writing. From there, you'll explore the development of reading and writing from infancy to the early school years. You'll know what problems to look for and how to assist a struggling reader. You will see how you can boost literacy growth during daily routines and child's play.

Gain confidence in your ability to guide a child's literacy development, and take pleasure in seeing how even the littlest events can lead to really big steps in reading and writing success.

Courses are delivered to you through expertly executed lessons, online instruction and interaction with like-minded students. Our courses are designed to deliver all of the benefits of studying in a classroom whilst giving you the flexibility to study at a time and place to suit your needs. You can access your classroom 24/7 from any device with an internet connection.

This course has a 3 month duration. You'll complete comprehensive lessons, quizzes and assignments before submitting your final exam at the end of the course to achieve your certificate. Courses must be completed within the 3 month access period.

In our first lesson, I'll introduce you to the course philosophy and our objectives. Then I'll provide examples and anecdotes to show you some of the many ways we all interact with reading in our daily lives. We'll explore the history of reading instruction so that you'll understand where research has taken us.

Just as a child communicates with us before using words, young children initiate many literacy-related activities before they actually read and write. In this lesson, I'll reveal the language skills that have the greatest impact on a child becoming a successful reader and writer. You'll end this lesson with a new understanding of the complexities of language development. You'll also see any child's language skills in a new light.

We all get excited when children learn their ABCs. But what role does this skill play in becoming a reader and writer? And what does it really mean to <em>know</em> your ABCs? Today we'll uncover the differences between rote memory, knowledge of sounds and symbols, phonemic awareness, and how all these things come together for the early reader.

While <em>attention</em> and <em>literacy</em> may seem like big words for little people, the way a child's brain is attending to print in his world has a huge impact on reading, writing, and learning. In today's lesson, you'll learn about different types of attention and the importance of having an organized thinking system in order to learn about print. These discoveries may shed some light on <em>your</em> thinking, too!

Today you'll discover what's happening when a child works to store information in memory. By the end of this lesson, you'll realize how important it is to store information in some sort of order, and also how to get things out of memory again once they're put away. You'll then be able to watch a young reader with a new awareness of how this skill impacts her success.

You'll understand what <em>understanding</em> is all about in today's lesson. How does a child make sense of what you read to him or what he reads to himself? In this lesson, we'll explore the many skills a child needs to understand text. Just because a child can say a word doesn't mean he knows the word when reading it. After this lesson, you'll know why!

While we'd never want or expect a child under two to read, much pre-literacy work goes on during the early years before a child is really even talking. In today's lesson, you'll learn how infants grow to become readers. We'll explore the many emerging literacy processes that occur during the first two years of life. Then I'll fill you in on numerous activities that you can do during this period to build literacy skills. Put away the flashcards—these activities are way more fun!

Today we'll explore the sequence of skills that brings toddlers and preschoolers to the threshold of becoming true readers and writers. You'll learn why you should read that favorite story one more time, with enthusiasm! In fact, once you understand how much this repetition is helping your child's literacy, you'll want to read it a dozen more times. I'll provide examples of pre-writing and reading in this lesson, too.

Research shows that we all learn literacy skills in pretty much the same order. In today's lesson, I'll show you that order, and then I'll explain why it's okay if your child doesn't meet these milestones by a specific age. This lesson will guide you through the evolution of reading and writing letters, words, sentences, and then complex ideas.

How do all of these pieces come together to produce an able reader? By the end of this lesson, you'll know what <em>fluency</em> looks like when a young child is successfully reading. We'll also look ahead to a child's future growth. Literacy skills continue to develop so a child can be successful with literacy activities throughout school and life. Today's lesson will help you experience fluent reading through the eyes and mind of a blossoming reader.

Now that you know all about the mental processes and learning sequences that lead to becoming a writer, I'll show you many activities that demonstrate how the complex skill of writing emerges. You'll learn what to watch for and how to assist a child who's becoming a successful scribe.

What's going on when a child isn't reading or writing when you expect him to? By the end of this lesson, you'll know how to assist a child who struggles with literacy learning and how to locate resources for assistance. We'll also discuss learning differences to help you enjoy the strengths of a child who may be a little slower to master reading and writing than her peers.

Looking for a fun, challenging job that&rsquo;s always in demand? If so, AMA (administrative medical assisting) may be just the field for you! In this lesson, we&rsquo;ll look at the exciting job opportunities for AMAs, the variety of careers they can choose from, and the different settings where they can work.

<p>The law and medicine go hand-in-hand&mdash;so today we&rsquo;ll look at the laws you&rsquo;ll want to know if you become an AMA. We&rsquo;ll cover everything from contracts to malpractice, and delve into HIPAA (a federal act that affects everyone in the health care field). In addition, we&rsquo;ll take a quick peek at ethics and medical office etiquette. </p>

Today we&rsquo;ll explore the office equipment and computer hardware you&rsquo;re likely to use as an AMA. In addition, we&rsquo;ll delve into software&mdash;both standard office programs and the specialized software we use in the field of medical information management.

If you think filing is a bore, this lesson will change your mind. You&rsquo;ll discover what the rainbow of colored stickers on a medical file means, and you&rsquo;ll even practice creating a patient chart yourself. You&rsquo;ll also find out why medical offices love lateral files, and you&rsquo;ll master the tricky rules of alphabetizing. (Yes, it&rsquo;s more challenging than it looks!)

Now that you&rsquo;re an expert on the outside of a patient chart, it&rsquo;s time to look inside. Today you&rsquo;ll find out which forms go in a medical record, and just where you&rsquo;ll put each one. In addition, you&rsquo;ll learn about two styles of note-taking: SOAP and CHEDDAR. And finally, you&rsquo;ll delve into the topic of medical record audits and find out the legal way to correct a patient&rsquo;s chart.

<p>It&rsquo;s time to introduce the star of our show: the patient. Today you&rsquo;ll learn everything about what we call a <i>patient encounter</i>. We&rsquo;ll start by talking about the phone skills you can use to make appointments, handle questions, and soothe angry callers. Next, we&rsquo;ll flip open the appointment book and explore the tricks for scheduling patients easily and efficiently. And finally, we&rsquo;ll follow a patient&rsquo;s visit from start to finish, and see how many tasks an AMA does during that appointment.</p>

<p>We&rsquo;ll start this lesson in the waiting room, where you&rsquo;ll learn more about the tasks a receptionist handles&mdash;from opening and closing a medical office to keeping the reception area ship-shape. After that, we&rsquo;ll talk about some barriers to communicating effectively with patients, and you&rsquo;ll discover ways to overcome them. We&rsquo;ll end our lesson by looking at one of the fun and creative jobs that AMAs do: creating informational brochures and teaching aids.</p>

Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, commercial insurance&mdash;what does it all mean? In today&rsquo;s lesson, you&rsquo;ll find out! First, you&rsquo;ll learn the meaning of terms like <i>managed care</i>, <i>capitation</i>, and <i>fee-for-service</i>.&nbsp; Next, we&rsquo;ll explore government programs like Medicare, Medicaid, Workers&rsquo; Compensation, and TRICARE. By the time you&rsquo;re done, you&rsquo;ll have a good feel for the many types of insurance an AMA handles every day.

<p>Did you ever study an insurance claim form? If so, you know it contains dozens of mysterious questions and checkboxes. Well, today you&rsquo;ll come face-to-face with one of these claim forms&mdash;and conquer it. By the end of our lesson, you&rsquo;ll know how to fill in each field of the CMS-1500 claim form. In fact, you&rsquo;ll even get to try it yourself!</p>

Medical coding is a hot field for AMAs, so it's a great specialty if you're looking for job security. In today's lesson, we'll take a quick look at diagnostic coding and see why it's both fun and challenging. We'll take a tour through the ICD-10-CM, talk about the detective work involved in abstracting a diagnostic statement, and explore the steps of coding a diagnosis.

<p style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">We&rsquo;ll finish up our tour of medical coding today with an overview of procedural coding. First, you&rsquo;ll learn all about a manual called the CPT and discover how to use it to code everything from surgeries to X-rays to acupuncture. After that, we&rsquo;ll examine a second manual called the HCPCS (&ldquo;hix-pix&rdquo;), which contains codes for ambulances, root canals, and much more. We&rsquo;ll also delve into anesthesia coding, a tricky but rewarding sub-specialty.</p>

Learn to create Web pages, layouts, and websites using CSS formatting options and other tools with Adobe's industry-standard Web design application.

You've taken your first steps into Web design, and your fingers are beginning to cramp from all that typing—but don't panic! Developing your coding skills has not been in vain! You're ready for Dreamweaver—Adobe's preeminent Web development application—which has been designed from the ground up to make developing websites easier.

You'll begin by touring the Dreamweaver workspace and configuring it for your specific site-management needs. You'll learn how to use Dreamweaver's intuitive tool set to structure text, and investigate the myriad formatting options CSS provides. Along the way, you'll work with images, build navigation elements, discuss effective layout methods, learn where and when to use tables, and examine successful site planning strategies.

By the end of the course, you'll have successfully built a website and know how to use Dreamweaver's built-in FTP tools to upload to the server of your choice.

Your first lesson will introduce you to one of Dreamweaver's greatest strengths: its clean, simple interface. Not only will you learn the primary interface elements, you'll also find out how to preview your work in multiple Web browsers&mdash;because rigorous testing is the key to a successful website. By testing and adapting your site documents across multiple browsers, you'll ensure that every site visitor, regardless of their browser, has a positive user experience.

Dreamweaver is a site creation and management tool, not just some glorified HTML editor. While you're building a site, Dreamweaver has the ability to track each color you assign, every image and multimedia file you insert, every Web address you refer to, as well as every step you take while working on a specific document. Dreamweaver then keeps all this information right at your fingertips to use again and again. In today's lesson, you'll learn the steps you need to take to put these features to work for you.

The two most important aspects of any website are what it says and how it looks. In this lesson on structuring text, you'll learn how to group blocks of text into elements such as headings, paragraphs, and lists. In certain respects, structuring text with Dreamweaver is very similar to working in your word processor. It's important to understand, however, that Dreamweaver is not a word processor. And perhaps more importantly, word processing and Web design are totally different worlds. This lesson also includes an introduction to HTML, which stands for <i>HyperText Markup Language</i>.

When HTML was first created, nobody thought the Web would become what it is today. HTML was simply meant to be a fast and easy way for folks to format simple documents (black text on a white page). <i>Cascading Style Sheets</i> take us beyond that. Today you'll get a short introduction to Cascading Style Sheets (CSS for short), and you'll gain an understanding of how to implement CSS using Dreamweaver. We'll explore the basics behind how CSS works and how to use it to format, or style, your page text.

Believe it or not, early Web browsers couldn't display images. It's doubtful the Web would have become so popular if that were still true today. In this lesson, you'll learn how to use Dreamweaver to insert and format images within your documents. Even though Dreamweaver isn't a true image-editing application, it does offer some very impressive editing tools, and we'll explore these features today as well.

Well-structured navigation elements are the backbone of every successful website. In the past, designers attempted to make their navigation elements stand out using various image and JavaScript-based effects, more often than not guaranteeing that their navigation was anything but well structured. Fortunately, there's a cure: list-based navigation elements. In this lesson, you'll expand your CSS horizons and discover how to format your structured lists any way you like.

We use tables to display data&mdash;columns and rows of information with headings and borderlines, just like the typical spreadsheet. In the dark ages before WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML editors, digging through the long and complex code required to render a table on screen was mind-bending at best. With a tool like Dreamweaver, table editing becomes a snap. And in this lesson, you'll see just how true that statement is.

You've probably filled out a Web form before. Forms allow site visitors to input their information and send it to the Web server. For the Web server to use the data visitors enter, there must be a processing script on the server. This script, or groups of scripts, accepts the data and does something with it. But in order to use a form, you first need to build it. In today's lesson, we'll focus on the creation of form pages, their formatting, and their layout.

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are the core of modern Web design. In this lesson, we'll examine some Web design principles and explore page layout using CSS. In the process, you'll get acquainted with the tools Dreamweaver uses to do some of our coding.

In today's lesson, we'll explore ways to speed up your work flow and easily reuse content with the help of Dreamweaver's Assets and History panels. You'll learn how to use the Assets panel to quickly access elements and get them into new pages, so you don't have to go hunting through your site for previously used content. When we explore the History panel, you'll learn how to undo anything you wish you hadn't done, as well as repeat formatting procedures throughout your site.

In the life cycle of a website, the design and development period is the most fun. It's also the shortest. You spend much more time managing and maintaining your site. Dreamweaver appreciates this reality and has put as much thought and effort into its site management and maintenance tools as it has into its development tools. In today's lesson, you'll learn how to use Dreamweaver's site management tools to connect to your Web server and to upload and download files. You'll also find out how to use Check-In and Check-Out, which let workgroups develop sites together without overwriting content. And you'll discover how to attach design notes to your files, so you and fellow workers can communicate across conflicting work schedules.

You now have an introductory knowledge of Dreamweaver, and you know just enough to be dangerous. We'll spend our last lesson together going over site planning. You'll learn the five basic questions that you'll need to answer before starting any website project. We'll discuss where and how to gather your site content (text, graphics, and other media), as well as different strategies for organizing that content once you have it. By the time you finish this lesson, no matter what type of website you need to build, you'll know exactly how to plan for its success!
